Only a 2 hour drive north from Toronto hides a canopy of luminous stars that materializes from an ocean of blackness, creating a truly Canadian experience. The Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Reserve is 5000 acres of bedrock, wetlands, and stunted tree growth that provides a spectacular 360 degree view of uninterrupted night sky.
During the day, the Torrance Barrens is used for mountain biking, hiking, and snowshoeing. At night, it becomes a natural vista displaying the panorama of the Milk Way. Occasionally the Northern Lights (aurora Borealis) can be seen as greenish ribbons on the horizon.
These semi-wilderness trails can be hazardous, be prepared with proper hiking footwear and clothing. Remember to stay on the marked trails (white markings and/or ribbons) and that no fires are permitted.
Take only pictures, leave only footprints.
