Harvest is underway!

♫ It’s the most wonderful time of the year! ♫

The warm fall means the cranberries have been slow to turn red, but here’s a cool cranberry fact: white cranberries are ripe! They actually have red pigment (anthocyanin) in them. If you cook (or freeze) white cranberries, they turn red. Frosty fall nights draw this pigment out onto the skin – and also keep the farmer from sleeping! Harvest activities will be going on everyday until the end of October.

With Good Maintenance of Fuel-Burning Appliances, You Can Prevent Carbon
Monoxide Build-up in Your HomeThe Muskoka Fire Prevention Officers would like to remind
residents in Muskoka to have their annual maintenance performed on their fuel-burning
appliances. Making sure appliances are well maintained and inspected by a professional at least
once a year. This includes: furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, gas stoves and gas water heaters.
Carbon monoxide (also known as CO) is a colourless, odourless, tasteless, toxic gas produced
when carbon-based fuels are incompletely burned such as wood, propane, natural gas, heating
oil, gasoline and charcoal. Carbon monoxide can be present in your home or cottage at any
time of the year. However, the risk is greater in the winter months when we tend to use these
appliances more frequently.

Carbon monoxide (CO) can only be detected with a carbon monoxide alarm. It is the law to
have an alarm installed near each sleeping area in the home or cottage. Follow the
manufacturer’s instructions for installation, testing, use and replacement of your alarm(s). Test
your alarms regularly. A carbon monoxide alarm is a good second line of defense. It is not a
substitute for the proper care and maintenance of your fuel – burning appliance(s).
You can help prevent carbon monoxide with good maintenance of fuel-burning appliances.
Have your appliances inspected and maintained by a professional before the cold weather sets
